Bea is out of town so Herman is running the Juried Show this year. We have had some meetings and discussed what we want to do this year. There are some changes that we decided to make this year. The largest is that there are now 8 categories. This will allow similar images to be judged against each other, instead of against many dissimilar images. That also allows more people to be recognized for their work and creativity.

The rules and entry forms are on this website so you can look at them and download and print them so you are ready when you submit your images. They are here along with more information about the Show.

Herman has a flier that he is putting up to advertise. I have put that here too. You can print some out and put them in places you think would have people interested in submitting photos. You can also print out the rules to give people who are interested in the show. We have also put up some criteria that we will ask the judges to use.

So all of you should see what the categories are and start working on images that will fit them.

The Christmas Party will be on December 8 at 6:30pm. Donna and Roger Boe have graciously invited us into their home, at 226 S. 16th Ave. in Pocatello. A big thanks to them for providing a nice place for us.

This is a pot luck party, so bring a fun dish to share and your appetite, because there is always a lot of GREAT food. There is always more yummy food than we can eat, and that is more than some of us should eat.

As part of the party, we will be electing officers for 2012, so start thinking about who you want to lead us next year. If someone wants to be that person, you may let it be known any time between now and the party and you can enter the race.

We may even do Show-&-Tell. So bring some images. Jump drive, disk, or print all work fine. We have a small light table if someone wants to bring slides (probably holds 3 or 4 at a time). That might be a little tough for many to see, but we will use it if needed.

Donna and Roger Boe brought the idea to the Art Center and the Board accepted the idea. Artists were invited to submit photos of their works to a committee who selected the set of pieces that would be presented to the curator at the Capital Building. When they were presented, she accepted all of the suggested pieces, and set a date for the exhibit to hang in the Capital Building.

The works were gathered here in Pocatello and transported to Boise, where they were hung. We visited the exhibit and photographed the exhibit with the intention of letting people who could not see it in person have the opportunity to see pictures of it. We especially wanted all of the artists to be able to see what the exhibit looked like.

I have posted the pictures in a Gallery here. I hope that you enjoy seeing them.

This month, Ruth had the First Saturday Photo Safari be Scott Kelby’s World Wide Photo Walk since they fell on the same date.

We met at the ISU Quad, by the west entrance to the SUB. We got to see the sun rise over Red Hill. It was ISU’s Homecoming, so there were lots of chalk drawing on the sidewalk.

We had eight people participate this year. Several were members of our club, a couple were not. But it was fun to spend a couple of hours with other people who enjoy photography, looking for ways to create some fun images. I have not doubt that many great images will come out of this experience.

Here is a Gallery to show some of the fun things we captured.

And here is the Flickr site for the Walk.

Over on my blog, I walk through how I created this image if you want to see how I got there.

In September we will almost have a very famous and special guest. No, David Ziser (the will known wedding photographer, blogger, and workshop instructor) will not be in Pocatello, but we will be watching a video he made. It talks about 5 of his favorite photos and how they were made.

It is a great insight into how someone who consistently captures amazing images goes about creating those images. It takes some thought and work to get those, and he shares what was going on and how he did it. This is a great video and in-spite of the fact that he is shooting weddings and we are not (at least usually not), much of what he talks about is stuff that would help us in whatever situation we are photographing. He is a master of Light and how to see, manipulate, create, and use it. So plan to be there.

We will also ask a couple of people to bring in one of their favorite images and talk about how it was created. So you could just watch this video online, but you would miss out on the locals if you do that. :-)

The July meeting will be July 28 at 7:30 at the Art Center.

John Bunker will be doing a presentation about HDR (High Dynamic Range). If you want to know what that is, come listen to John. Basically it is techniques to allow us to capture a wider range of dark and light. Cameras have a limited range from black to white. If things are too bright, we say they are “blown out”. That is, they are so bright that the camera simply records all of it as pure white and all detail is lost. Likewise, in dark areas, if things are too dark, the camera calls it all pure black.

There are times when the scene we want to capture has too much difference between the highlights and the darks for the camera to capture it all. But HDR to the rescue. And John will be telling us how to do that.
